The Italcementi Research and Innovation Centre, "iLab", occupies an area of 23,000 square metres within the Kilometro Rosso Science & Technology Park. With two floors above the ground and three below, the white concrete building features a window system that creates contrast between the solidity of the concrete and the lightness of the glass. Its structure contains two adjacent wings overlooking a central courtyard. The first wing, which is parallel to the motorway, houses laboratories and offices, while the second wing contains a large conference room and public areas. The lighting project paid particular attention to energy consumption and to limiting maintenance costs. This determined the choice of the lights used: long-lasting high-efficiency sources with adequate technical and photometric qualities of the light radiation emitted, in accordance with the visual requirements of different uses within the various rooms. The positioning and installation methods allowed the solutions to be integrated into the architectural components, remaining consistent with the compositional rhythm of the spaces and coordinated to the system requirements. The project was awarded the PLATINUM LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the highest international standard in energy and environmental certification.
