Corazzieri Hall, Quirinale Palace
The oldest finds on the Quirinale hill are burial tombs (dated by the 9th
century B. C.), in ancient Rome the Hill became strategic and was heavely
fortified, during the Imperial Age buildings were built... In Medieval times,
vineyards, garden and sculptures bear witness of the past grandeur of Rome...
The work that ultimely led to the current configuration of the Palace
started on 1574 with the restructuring of the Villa (belonging to Cardinal
Ippolito d´Este) commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII who wanted to construct on the Hill
the Papal residence. Work on the edifice was finally completed under Pope
Clement XII (1730-1740)... After the napoleonic Age, the building became, in 1879,
the residence of Kings of Italy and in 1948 the Presidential Palace... Currently,
the Hall of the Corazzieri... is rectangural and has a rather high ceiling. starting at
a height of 5.5 meters, the room is entirely decorated by frescoes of
Annibale Duranti. In the middle of the wooden ceiling, with golden decorations
on a blue background by Carlo Maderno there is the Royal Coat of Arms
wich was placed there in 1870. The overall rearrangements of the hall also included the
overhaul of electric
system which was brought in line with the latest European standards. The
lighting system maintained the original position of the lamps within the
cornice, while the light sources were standardised so as to avoid contact
among them or with other metal or non metal components (FLARE, 24, 2000,
pp. 58-61).
