Light and Jewels
1. Valuable objects from the Bulgari collection
Manmade jewels and halogen bulbs have their own tale to tell, perhaps not such a long history as the ancient icons on display
in the underground spaces of St. Andrew´s, but just as intense. The trick was to find the most suitable form for holding
a light designed to highlight a precious work, and in the end we discovered that the most suitable form for holding a light is
the light itself. This seems a rather insignificant discovery, but it is not if you consider the barbaric way in which lights
are shut away, hidden and downgraded inside all kinds of receptacles made of glass, iron, glass and plastic. To take them out
again and bring them back into fray it took the technology that gave us halogen lights and perhaps a bit of invention (or lack
of it) on our part. (Livio and Piero Castiglioni, OSRAM Notiziario − December 1976)
