Culture and Technology of Italian Forniture
1-2. General view
Italy´s particular position with respect to "applied
arts" and crafts over a very long period. In effect the coming of mechanization as made
the use of manual activities superfluous in the mass produced items, on the other hand
the ancient italian tradition in the sector of ceramic, glass, wood, straw and materials,
is such that in those sectors where industrial production has taken over from crafts
(as e.g. in forniture and furnishing) some of the prerogative of the italian character
have remained − fantasy and the search for a "good form".(Gillo Dorfles- "The situation
of industrial design in Italy" in catalogue: italienishes Mobel design, ICE 1980, pgg. 12-21)
In planning this exhibition, importance has been given to the item as a priority for the
visitor: comunication intended as the relation between the object and the media, and design as
the basic instruments for the product´s planning. A very simple system of short boards and
textile panels delimited the expositive areas where the object were arranged in chronological
order. The "Scintilla" system, with very low voltage halogen bulbs, expressely designed for
those spaces lighted up forniture and expositive panels with sparkling light, without shadows.
