Colombo, la nave e il mare

The exhibition was held inside the huge hold of the ship
"Italia" moored in the old port near the Ocean Aquarium. "It was decided that
such an elaborate exhibition, broaching all kinds of different topics, called for
an extremely simple project design capable, however, of emphasising sensations,
beauty and unique nature of the objects on display. The exhibition tour was a sort
of guideline beginning in the aquarium building, entering the ship´s hold and
terminating on the deck. The objects, placed on imitation chests, were arranged as
if they were being "stowed away." The tour started in the sunlight and then
descended into the darkness of the ship´s hold. The bigger or particularly
interesting objects, set out in more random fashion, were separated from the rest
of the material on display both due to their special value and to break down the
rigidity of the "stowage" layout" (Giulio Macchi). Inside the ship "Italia"
a brief history of model ships featured thousands of scale models of vessels;
the world´s most valuable collection of naval jewellery with ships made of silver,
ivory and crystal, charts and instruments for navigating, globes of the sea and land,
paintings and figureheads emerge from the darkness of the hold to be lit up by
spotlighting from small projectors fitted with extremely low-voltage dichroic halogen
lamps emitting various beams of light.
