Spazio Oberdan
1. Entrance on via Vittorio Veneto
2. The multifunctional movie theatre
3. The huge exhibition hall at the first floor
The Palazzo built at the end of 19th century, had various
shops on the ground floor, whilst the six floor above were apartments. Over the years the
Palazzo has undergone various interventions, the work carried out in the thirties brought
about the Cinema Giardini (renown, above all as a blue film cinema). After important
restoration work the building in a state of ruin has been transformed into an exhibition
hall and offices for the Provincial administration in Milan. The lighting follows the
general architectural project: the large windows make it possible to see from outside what
is happening inside. Daylight contribute to lighting the internal space and lamplight
illuminates the Palace at night. To accentuate the interior/exterior relationship,
"Radius" lighting equipment has been placed above the windows on both the first
and second floor. Their function during the night is to accentuate the light which already
emanates from inside. Due to the many activities that take place in the Palazzo, a flexible
lighting system was needed. The lighting project has also been blended in with the architecture.
Built in "Frame" equipment has been used with four very low voltage halogen bulbs,
different beems emission, adjustable. The distribution by regular mesh of equipment in
all the areas of the Palazzo (entrance, ticket office, bookshop, computer hall, cinema,
exhibition hall) allows to be assimilated into the architecture and become integral part
of it (FLARE, n°22, December 1999)
