In the 1980s department stores decided to make a radical change: they began laying out their spaces like specialist retailers, most notably clothes shops, placing their various "designer labels" in distinctively elegant and serene settings. Lighting design went with the flow, abandoning conventional patterns of florescent light tubes set in ceilings and opting for the kind of lights already used in shops, showrooms and boutiques, featuring halogen lamps for their better colour effects, small dimensions and adjustability, floodlighting for lighting up vertical and horizontal planes in general, and spotlighting for focusing on specific points. The various experiments with lighting appliances like "Scintilla", "Palio", "Sillaba" and "Semaforo con Sillaba" produced fine results and opened up the way to using innovative lighting systems like the later "Cestello" design for retail spaces like these.
